How to play

Win tricks to count your score down. First player to zero takes the game — and a punt is what sends you the other way.

The score

  • Every trick you win takes 1 point off.
  • First player to reach 0 wins the game.
  • Sitting a hand out on a score of 3 or less adds 1 point to it.

The hand

  • A hand is one deal, played out as a run of tricks — a trick being one card from every player who is in.
  • At the start of a hand everyone bids: the number of tricks they expect to win. Bid nothing and you have passed.
  • The highest bidder names one suit as trump for that hand. Trump beats every other suit, however low the card.
  • The first card of a trick sets the suit: follow it if you hold it, play anything if you do not.
  • The highest card of the suit led takes the trick — or the highest trump, if any were played. A card of any other suit cannot win it. Whoever takes the trick leads the next one.
  • You can sit a hand out instead of playing it, but never more than two in a row — the third you must play.

Getting punted

  • A punt is the game running backwards: points go on instead of coming off, and the tricks you did win that hand count for nothing.

Spades is different

  • When Spades is named trump, nobody may sit out — every player still in the game plays the hand.

On the table

  • D DealerThe puck sits beside whoever dealt this hand, and moves one seat along for the next one.
  • C Cut winnerThis player cut the highest card before the game and dealt the first hand. The mark stays with them; the puck is what moves as the deal passes on.
  • S Sitting outThis player is sitting the hand out and plays no cards in it. A small number on the badge means it was their second in a row, so they must play the next one.
Where everyone stands The hand skates in to the pile. Anyone sitting the hand out stays back at the boards — smaller, paler, and taking no cards. Nobody stands the same distance out as anybody else: who got to the puck first is part of what you are looking at.
